Should we be manning the barricades as a new generation of Blackshirts takes over the country? According to reports in yesterday’s newspapers, “almost half the country would back a far Right party” that dissociated itself from violence and fascist imagery.

The reports – based on the results of a poll of 5,054 people conducted by the anti-fascist organisation Searchlight – stirred up a good deal of shock-horror as, I suppose, they were intended to. Searchlight is a campaigning organisation. Saying “Eek! Look out! Fascists! They’re everywhere!” is – not to impugn the good work they do – slightly the point of its existence.

When you look at the question that this 48 per cent figure (“almost half the country”, natch, rather than, say, “less than half”) answered yes to, the story unravels. These interviewees were asked whether they would “definitely support” or “consider supporting” a non-violent political party that “wants to defend the English, create an English parliament, control immigration and challenge Islamic extremism”.

Are these the four key indicators of fascism? “Defend the English” is an almost meaningless phrase – and could just as easily cover the people who bore on about celebrating St George’s Day or campaign for authentic Cornish pasties as neo-Nazi boot-boys. The creation of an English Parliament is no more than the logical conclusion of New Labour’s wet-blanket plans for a succession of regional talking shops. To “control immigration” was the stated aim of all three main political parties at the last election (well, duh: I challenge you to find the party that stands for abolishing passports and throwing the borders wide open).

And how many people do you see sticking up for Islamic extremism? The aspiration to “challenge” it is hardly a mark of the far Right, unless we’re to imagine jackbooted hordes marching in lockstep down Whitehall threatening “firm words and a searching dialogue”.

My guess is that 52% were put off supporting this blandly centrist imaginary political party only by the thought of finding unctuous English Assembly Members in cheap suits on their doorsteps at election time.

It is only by wilfully interpreting these things as code-phrases for “send them home”, “outlaw Islam” and “kill all the Welsh” do you arrive at the idea that 48% of people would vote for fascists given the chance. And, of course, it’s bollocks: they wouldn’t and they don’t.

A poll on actual parties of the Right gets conducted, for real, and with a much larger sample size, every time we have an election. The BNP is a far Right party that doesn’t use fascist imagery and does its best to dissociate itself from violence – and its share of the vote remains more or less what it has always been: that is, pathetic.

The comedian, 48, urged voters to “banish the Nazis forever” as he handed out leaflets supporting the Mirror’s Hope Not Hate campaign. He said: “The BNP are out to scare people in this area with all sorts of lies.”

The BNP already has 11 seats on the local council and Eddie said it “was a worry” they might secure more. Leader Nick Griffin is standing against Labour’s Margaret Hodge for the seat.

Retired Dagenham Ford plant worker Jim McDermott, 73, hugged Eddie and told him: “Good luck to you.”

Mike Coleman, who is standing in Stoke-on-Trent South, said Muslims should vote BNP because it wants UK troops out of Afghanistan.

Other candidates dismissed the call. Liberal Democrat Zulfiqar Ali said the BNP was trying to scare Muslims.

Conservative James Rushton called it a publicity stunt and Labour’s Rob Flello said it was not worth talking about.

‘Not true’

In his letter Mr Coleman told worshippers at the Glani Noor mosque in Longton that victory at the general election for any of the three main political parties would spell “disaster” for the Muslim world.

“That’s where we need a revolution in thinking and approach. I accept I’ve got to change my view on the Muslim community, they must accept they’ve got to change their view as well,” he told BBC Stoke.

But Mr Ali said: “They’re trying to scare them, that all the West is against Islam and Muslims, which is not true.

“All along we have been saying that we should stabilise the situation in Afghanistan and get our troops out, because our troops lives are at risk.”

Mr Flello said: “I’d rather talk about the things that matter in Stoke-on-Trent South.”

Mr Rushton said he was “totally bemused” by the letter, adding: “I think the letter is a cheap publicity stunt and will have very little impact on anybody’s voting intentions.”

The candidates announced for Stoke-on-Trent South are: Liberal Democrat: Zulfiqar Ali; UK Independence Party: Mark Barlow; Independent: Mark Breeze; British National Party: Michael Coleman; Labour: Rob Flello; Staffordshire Independent Group: Terry Follows; Conservative: James Rushton.

Just three days remain until the General Election, where the British National Party hopes to make significant gains, and secure its first Members of Parliament.

But on the other side of Griffin’s pre-election bluster is a sinister web of secrets, paranoia and suspicion, as party morale sinks and people leave in their droves, despite Griffin’s lies about their ‘increased popularity’.

Speaking exclusively to One Million United is Dave Garner, 49 from the Midlands, who spent several years in the party before finally leaving early this year. He is now dedicating his time to exposing and shaming the party that he believed in for five years.

He says, “In the end my conscience couldn’t deal with all the racism. I joined as I thought it was about being patriotic and loving your country; I was wrong. I left them, then decided to help stop these people getting any power.”

Dave, a long-serving ex-serviceman, watched in disgust as party officials used shocking racism at meetings and events, and was privy to party secrets. He shares them with us today, in a last bid to keep the BNP out of British parliament.

“I’m still patriotic; I’m a ex-serviceman of 21 years and I support our brave armed forces and veterans. They will always come first. I have coloured friends that I served with and they are my friends for life. I was fucking livid when EDL  turned up in Wootton Bassett”, he says.

“I was 18 when the National Front crumbled in 1979 as they pushed to win a election seat; I hope the same happens now to the BNP. The main thing is to stop this group of hardcore Nazi-sympathising racists from brainwashing people and gaining power as Hitler did.”

Dave is keen to stress the emphasis on the BNP’s use of propaganda and lies to ‘control’ it’s supporters; ‘brainwashing’, as he calls it.

“I’m now out of the BNP, and feel foolish for falling for their brainwashing tactics. I despise them and what they stand for. They must be stopped. The BNP are becoming more ‘people friendly’ by frightening the public into thinking it’s the fault of other races that this country is in a mess. They employ propaganda tactics as used in Mein Kampf, just like Hitler; frighten the public and then offer them a solution.”

He also witnessed horrifying racism at party meetings and official events.

“At meetings is where you see the real racism; party members blaming the state of the country on the immigrants.  At one meeting in Blackpool, James Clayton (the election candidate for Blackpool) said he hated ‘black niggers’ the most in his ward. He detests black people with a passion.”

He added, “The biggest kick-off I saw came in a Merseyside meeting late last year when a Ghanaian UKIP member attended; all the Liverpool BNP members refused to attend, and out of over 150 attending less than 10 shook his hand. I shook his hand and chatted to him about his book. I felt embarrassed for him and ashamed of how he was treated.”

“That meeting was a turning point for me; I never attended a meeting after that. I hear the Ghanaian man has left UKIP and joined the BNP, despite James Clayton saying he will never allow him to a Blackpool meeting.”

During his time with the party, Dave also says he was asked about obtaining illegal firearms.

“Because I was an ex-serviceman I was asked if I can get hold of arms and ammunition by a prominent election candidate in the North. He said, ‘If things continue like this we may need them’.”

And despite it’s lies to the contrary, the party is not as buoyant as it might appear in the run up to this important election.

Speaking of the internal paranoia, Dave says: “Morale in the BNP at the moment is very low. They hate the new membership criteria change and they constantly worried about infiltrators into their ranks, so much so there is regular fall outs and disputes between members and accusations amongst the ranks. They even  have members attend UAF meetings.”

And the public’s disdain for them runs deep: “The BNP find it very difficult to find venues for their events. One, though – Body Image Fitness Centre in the North West is apparently used regularly for local, regional and national meetings. It’s a bigger venue to hold a larger capacity and has been used for the  annual party conference and most importantly they will use this venue for a forthcoming summer school, a training event for BNP officials.”

Dave is now actively engaged in combating fascism and spend a lot of his free time working to stop the BNP and it’s counterparts. He’s refreshed, and excited about the election, which he feels sure will be unsuccessful for the party in the wake of recent events.

“It was great to see Simon (Nicholson) come forward and spill the beans on the BNP. Another ex-serviceman duped by the racists in the British National Party”, he says.

“At meetings, no-one checks membership cards, so the audience is a mixture of BNP, English Defence League and National Front members. The speeches are always intended to scare the audience with the ‘threat’ of Islam and immigrants, that there’s some conspiratorial plan to change our living standards, and that Islam and immigration are to blame.”

“It all got too much for me in the end, and no-one ever answered my questions about would the commonwealth soldiers in our army be allowed to stay under a BNP government, despite their official stance on British troops.”

“I was so please to see the news of the EHRC decision regarding the membership criteria; they will be on their knees now! This will seriously affect their general election campaign and funds, which means they won’t be able to make that breakthrough they so desperately want.”

He takes a deep breath, let’s out a completely uncontrived sigh, and concludes:

“Just thinking about the BNP gets me angry now. I really hope groups like 1MU can continue to hit them where it hurts.”

Some details have been changed to protect identities

Jason Carr is standing for the BNP in Longhill council ward. The same name appears on the nomination paper for the National Front candidate for the Parliamentary seat in East Hull. There is also another nominee on the East Hull seat called Adam Everitt who was a BNP member although he may have defected to the NF.

Pictured bellow is Hull’s very own National Front. The banner holders are often seen wearing Clash T-shirts on Whitefriargate and drink in the William Wilberforce pub though the irony is probably lost on them.

It seems a rather strange coincidence that the BNP and NF have managed to avoid standing against each other in Hull and those nominations show that they do work together.

The most interesting link is the person who nominated the NF candidate in Myton council ward, a gentleman called Nigel Piggins.

Nigel Piggins (39), of Haltemprice Street, Hull, was jailed for two years three months in November 2005 for his part of the Stormer Plot constructed by  members of the extreme right-wing Racial Volunteer Force. Piggins, along with four others had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to publish a magazine called Stormer with the intention of stirring up racial hatred. It included a step by step guide to making a nailbomb and a petrol bomb.

An article entitled  Roast a Rabbi offered “one hundred team points” for the first person to torch a synagogue. Above a picture of a firebomb it said: “With the winter nights to shroud you in darkness we thought a few of you would like to don your disguises and rubber gloves and make things a little warmer.”

Racist Piggins was also sentenced to a further three months for distributing the Skrewdriver DVD, an infamous Nazi rock band, whom were a huge influence on the terrorist website Redwatch.

So, the BNP appears to have got itself  tied in with  racist terrorist criminals despite Nick Griffin’s claims they are not racists or Nazis, but merely a modern Nationalist party However,  as Griffin said on the launch of his Manifesto  “We still say what we have always done.”

Organisers, has put in place a dedicated Regional Press Officer
in each Region of the country. All media enquiries that come
through the new system at HQ that need to be dealt with at local
or regional level will now be filtered down to the Regional
Press Officers.

The Regional Press Officer is responsible for all public
relations and media interaction in each Region. No official
(except the RO), at whatever level, can speak to any media
outlets, no matter how small or localised, without first gaining
authorisation from the Regional Press Officer. Likewise, all
press releases have to be authorised by the Regional Press
Officer.
